Edinburgh's flagship book festival expands
Date: 20/11/2009
The Edinburgh International Book Festival has outgrown its traditional venue, Charlotte Square, and could expand into other parts of the city next year.
For 26 years the event has been held in the square's garden, which provides literary fans with an escape from the hustle and bustle of the Scottish capital during festival season.
However, council officials have claimed that the event has now 'outgrown' Charlotte Square and other venues are being considered.
The new director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Nick Barley, said there were no plans to abandon the square altogether.
He told the Scotsman: 'There may be certain events that are better suited to another venue for one reason or another.'
Every year, the festival attracts some of the biggest names in literature. Last August, the event played host to Kate Atkinson, Dave Gorman, Will Self, Monica Ali and Alain de Botton as well as many other literary giants.
