    Prestigious author Herta Muller will release the English edition of her next novel through an independent publisher.

    Portobello Books has acquired the rights to Atemschaukel, the latest work from the 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature winner.

    The publisher also revealed that it has acquired the German author's previous novel The Fox Was the Hunter Even Then, as well as the next full-length book she writes and a collection of selected essays.

    Philip Gwyn Jones of Portobello Books commented: 'This serves manifestly to demonstrate Portobello's fierce commitment to becoming the leading British home for the most enduring, most illuminating, most challenging work being written today in languages other than English.'

    Last month, the Swedish Academy announced that Muller had won the Nobel Prize for Literature for the 'concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose' displayed in works such as The Land of Green Plums, The Passport and Nadirs.

    Recent titles from Portobello Books include Eduardo Galeano'sMirrors, which examines the lives of people overlooked by conventional accounts of history, and Madame Verona Comes Down the Hill by Dimitri Verhulst - the story of a reclusive woman who returns to society.
