    An auction of rare copies of children's literature could generate sales of up to USD 1 million (GBP 600,000).

    Profiles in History revealed that its auction includes a copy of Lewis Carroll'sThrough the Looking Glass which was owned by the girl who inspired the author, the late Alice Liddell.

    The children's book is expected to command a price of up to USD 150,000 when it goes up for sale on December 16th.

    A copy of The Tale of Peter Rabbit that belonged to author Beatrix Potter will also be up for grabs, with the company expecting it to sell for up to USD 120,000.

    Furthermore, an uncorrected advance proof of J.K. Rowling'sHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has a price of USD 6,000 attached, with Profiles in History commenting: 'Reportedly, there were only 50 copies of this purple proof... [making it] a very rare Harry Potter collectible.'

    First editions of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum, Kenneth Grahame'sThe Wind In The Willows and The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien will also go under the hammer.

    A first edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species which was kept on a toilet bookcase is expected to fetch GBP 60,000 when it is sold at Christie's today.
