Author-in-hiding honoured for Mafia exposé
Date: 11/12/2009
An investigative journalist born in Naples has been given an honorary degree for his courageous exposé of the Mafia.
Roberto Saviano was presented with the accolade, on behalf of Milan's Brera Academy, by Nobel Laureate Dario Fo, reports Reuters.
Saviano's book, Gomorra, became an instant bestseller in 2006 and has made the author something of a symbol in the fight against organised crime.
As a result of the book, Saviano has to live under police protection because of threats to his life.
Commenting on Saviano's commitment to exposing the truth, Fo said: 'It's important to come together to recognise Saviano's work.'
Saviano told the audience at the award ceremony: 'As an author, you have to face up to the consequences of what you have written, and you have this sensation of being alone.'
'When such an occasion [as this] arises, you realise you're not alone,' he added.
While researching his book, Saviano worked at a Chinese textile mill and a construction site owned by organised criminal gangs.
