  • J. G. Ballard was a 'happy father'

    Date: 14/12/2009
Science fiction author J. G. Ballard was an extremely happy, loving father, the writer's daughter has claimed.

Writing for the Observer, Bea Ballard said that to the world he was a literary pioneer, but to her he was simply a loving father.

In his memoir, Miracles of Life, Ballard wrote: 'The years I spent as the parent of my young children were the richest and happiest I have ever known.'

According to Bea, those years were also extremely enjoyable for her and they laid the foundations of her happy life as an adult.

'I like to think of him rather like Prospero - he had ruled over his kingdom with great benevolence and kindly paternalism, and had created the most brilliant art with his magic,' she added.

Earlier this year Ballard, who won acclaim for his works Crash and Empire of the Sun, succumbed to prostate cancer at the age of 78.ADNFCR-2557-ID-19510197-ADNFCR
