Beckett play set for belated West End debut

29th May 2012

An acclaimed radio play by Samuel Beckett is to finally make its London stage debut, more than 50 years after it was first broadcast, with Sir Trevor Nunn set to direct.

The one-act play All That Fall concerns an elderly woman's journey to meet her blind husband at a railway station and was initially transmitted in 1957, though attempts to stage the production in the West End have repeatedly failed or been aborted.

However, Sir Trevor, former artistic director at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, has finally succeeded in his battle to bring the work to the stage, with the 70-seat Jermyn Street Theatre the venue for the performances.

'For many years I have been hoping to present Samuel Beckett's extraordinary radio play All That Fall on stage,' he explained.

'The Jermyn Street Theatre is the perfect intimate space for this unique project, as I attempt to recreate the studio circumstances for which the play was written.'

Sir Trevor said he hopes audiences will not attempt to find and read the play beforehand, as the impact will be 'at its most devastating' if theatregoers have no prior knowledge of the plot.

The production will run between October 9th and November 3rd, with Dame Eileen Atkins and Michael Gambon in the lead roles.
