Biographer: What Steve Jobs can really teach businesses

22nd March 2012

Steve Jobs' biographer has said that the late Apple founder's real lesson to business owners was to let their personality shine through.

Writing for Harvard Business Review, Walter Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute and the author of Steve Jobs, said that since his book was released many commentators have tried to draw management lessons from it.

He said that among the valuable business lessons Jobs taught were to maintain focus, put products before profits, push for perfection and only tolerate 'A' players on your staff.

Mr Isaacson added that in everything Jobs did within his business his personality was evident.

'The essence of Jobs, I think, is that his personality was integral to his way of doing business,' Mr Isaacson wrote.

'He acted as if the normal rules didn't apply to him, and the passion, intensity, and extreme emotionalism he brought to everyday life were things he also poured into the products he made. His petulance and impatience were part and parcel of his perfectionism.'

In addition to Steve Jobs, Mr Isaacson has also written biographies of Einstein, titled His Life and Universe, and Benjamin Franklin, titled An American Life.
