Iain Banks' new book comes with 'bonus features'

1st July 2010

Iain Banks' latest book comes bundled with a host of extra features which can be accessed via an iPhone application.

Released today (July 1st), the paperback edition of Transition offers readers further insights into the characters' backgrounds that go beyond the information contained within the novel - in a similar way to the extras contained on DVDs.

Jen Porter, co-founder of TradeMobile, the firm behind the new iPhone App, told the Independent: 'It's a way of enabling authors to reach out to fans.'

She added: 'We wanted to put people who love books in touch with their creators.

'What we're doing is using a digital device as a gateway to a companion to a novel.'

The application is used to scan a barcode on the back of the book, which unlocks 'secret' content, including videos of the author discussing his latest work.
