Irish Book of the Decade shortlist announced

16th April 2010

An extensive 50-title shortlist for the Irish Book of the Decade has been released.

Eoin Colfer, Hugo Hamilton, Cecelia Ahern and Colm Toibin are among the esteemed authors featured on the list.

And there are a number of writers from outside of the literary world included - such as footballer Roy Keane, whose autobiography Keane makes an appearance.

The shortlist of popular books was compiled by booksellers, librarians, literary critics and journalists from across the country.

Commenting on the prize, Alastair Giles, executive director of the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards, said: 'In the last ten years specifically, this country has produced a host of new internationally renowned authors, from every possible genre.'

'It is so inspiring to see this level of vibrancy, passion and pride that exists for the Irish literary heritage,' he added.

Toibin, who features on the shortlist twice for his books The Master and Brooklyn, is set to take part in the first ever Sydney Writers' Festival.
