Jeffery Deaver unveils latest James Bond book

26th May 2011

Jeffery Deaver has unveiled the latest officially-sanctioned James Bond book, Carte Blanche, revealing that the plot will see the British secret agent tackle 21st century enemies.

The last book in the series, Sebastian Faulks' Devil May Care, was set in the 1960s but Deaver said he wanted to set the action in Carte Blanche in 2011 to give the novel a more contemporary feel.

However, Deaver claimed he wanted the book to retain the grittiness found in Ian Fleming's original Bond novels, so he has kept the spy's use of state-of-the-art gadgetry to a minimum.

'In the movies he got a bit gadget-oriented. Fleming actually gave him relatively few gadgets - and I went back to that. Nowadays my BlackBerry has more capacity than the best computer in the mid-1950s,' the BBC reported him as saying.

The novel is published today (May 26th), just two days before what would have been Fleming's 103rd birthday.
