Mummy porn and cyber bullying join the dictionary

11th September 2012

The terms 'cyber bullying' and 'mummy porn' are among more than 80 new words and phrases added to the Collins Dictionary in its latest online edition, highlighting the influence of both the internet and E. L. James' bestselling Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.

Usually, the system of adding new words to the dictionary is a closed process, but this year Collins opened it up to members of the public and asked them to suggest their own potential inclusions.

After a process of internal vetting, 86 of the 4,400 suggestions were chosen by Collins to be included in the latest edition of the online dictionary, including 'amazeballs' – taken from TV programme The Only Way is Essex – and 'floordrobe', which refers to a pile of clothes that have not been hung up.

Of all the submissions, 'mummy porn' is the one that has most recently emerged in the social sphere, having being coined to describe the Fifty Shades of Grey books, which explore themes of a sexual nature and have a reputation for being popular with female readers.

Other new words include 'blootered' (a Scottish term for a person who is drunk) and 'frenemy' (an associate who is considered both a friend and a rival), while the interior design term 'shabby chic' - referring to a style that uses worn or distressed furnishings to achieve a romantic effect - is also incorporated into the latest edition of the dictionary.

Alex Brown, head of digital at Collins, commented: 'We were optimistic about just how keen people would be to take part, but have been blown away by the volume and variety of submissions and the way that this opportunity to contribute and help document the English language has captured the public imagination.'
