Search for UK's next top author begins

9th May 2011

A competition to discover the UK's brightest new commercial fiction author has been launched, with bestselling novelist Cathy Kelly heading the judging panel.

The People's Novelist aims to find emerging writers who have yet to be published or have not had the guidance needed to do so, and Kelly said the competition will hopefully uncover the next big thing in UK literature.

'There's a wealth of wonderful talent out there, so many marvellous writers who are just waiting for a chance to be published. This competition is about nurturing wonderful talent and giving a marvellous new author a chance to shine,' she added.

Lynne Drew, publisher at HarperFiction, which is helping to run the competition along with ITV, added that Kelly's 'huge talent for storytelling' makes her an ideal candidate to head the judging panel.

A similar ITV competition, launched in 2009, was won by Nicola Hodgkinson for Life with the Lid Off, her true life story about relocating her family from an urban environment to the coast.
