Senator Edward Kennedy dies aged 77

26th August 2009

Veteran US senator Edward M Kennedy has died aged 77.

The brother to the murdered former president John F Kennedy and senator Robert F Kennedy passed away following a long battle with a brain tumour.

Kennedy spent half a century playing a prominent role in US politics and has grown to become a figurehead for the Democrat cause during that time.

President Barack Obama said that he was 'heartbroken' to learn about the death.

He said: 'Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time.

'The Kennedy family has lost their patriarch, a tower of strength and support through good times and bad. Our hearts and prayers go out to them today.'

Kennedy became a Democratic Massachusetts senator in 1962 when he replaced his brother who went on to become president.
