Sir Walter Scott's home receives GBP 10m investment

The Borders home where Sir Walter Scott wrote many of his novels will benefit from a GBP 10 million investment.

Scottish culture minister Fiona Hyslop revealed that the A-listed Abbotsford House will receive a new visitor centre in addition to essential renovations, the Herald reported.

'The new development should provide a heartbeat for the Borders but also act as a beacon for Scott's work both nationally and internationally,' she commented.

Jason Dyer of the Abbotsford Trust also told the newspaper that the investment will boost the standing of Scott and promote debate on his works, which include Ivanhoe and Waverley.

The Scottish government, Historic Scotland and Scottish Enterprise will contribute GBP 2.45 million to the project, while GBP 1.5 million will come from Borders Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund is expected to add GBP 4.85 million. The remaining sum will be raised through private donations.

Last month, a campaign was started by the Thomas Hardy Society and the Open Spaces Society to save a historic footpath in Dorset which runs near a cottage mentioned in the author's Tess of the d'Urbervilles.
