Shortlisted for the 2004 Booker Prize, this novel consists of six stories that draw the reader from the late 19th century into the imagined future and back again. Apart from the sixth story, each of the "novellas" is interrupted midstream by the subsequent one, and the protagonist in each novella is connected in some way to the one in the next. I was particularly impressed how Mitchell skillfully altered his narrative style to reflect each novella's context. Furthermore, even for this non-reader of science fiction, I found the two stories taking place in the near- and post-apocalyptic future to be especially engrossing, with echoes of modern issues and problems convincingly (if somewhat depressingly) taken to a believable next level.

Zadie Smith’s debut novel is full of humour and pathos, will enrich the days you spend reading it, and make you sorry to see it end. Usually, I do not condone free reading in a bookstore-don’t crack the spine!-but read the first 6 pages or so. If, at the end of those pages you haven’t chuckled at least once or have the slightest curiosity about what happens next, that’s fine. You can walk away. Otherwise, you’ll have done yourself a favour. - Cindy. |
