Our staff are a pretty disparate bunch, comprising writers, scientists, students, artists, musicians and academics and yet what they all have in common, apart from their knowledge and experience, is their sheer passion for books. They are the ancient mariners of the book world, except that what they want to pass on is their enthusiasm. Take a wander through their favourites and see why they’ve chosen these particular titles. You can refine your search by combining Staff Picks with Categories or other ‘Browse by’ choices.

FEATURED STAFF PICKS

When I think of Lucia Berlin's stories I see colour: bright and vivid, erupting from the margins like wild bouquets. No matter how grim her subject matter, Berlin manages to capture the passing flashes of lyricism and beauty inherent in everyday life, and pin them to the page. One of the best - and most under-appreciated, in her time - short story writers I've ever read.

Told in the same stream-of-consciousness style that was the hallmark of McBride’s debut, A Girl is a Half-formed Thing, this brave and intimate novel charts an affair between a young drama student newly arrived in London from Ireland and an older actor. Full of sex and passion, guilt and shame, this is a heady and memorable reading experience that will leave you longing for more.
