Synopsis

From Marc-Antoine Laugier's primitive hut to the plantlike structures inspired by nature that architects are experimenting with today - such as blobs, Mobius strips, and honeycomb structures - nature plays an important role in the design of the human environment. In its fourth issue, 91 (the magazine with the slightly different perspective) tackles the subject of nature in architecture. Philip Ursprung offers a wide-ranging survey of the relationship between architecture and nature, which is anything but self-explanatory. Plants and Architecture is the title of a drawing by the Japanese architect Junya Ishigami, which presents the viewer with an architectural creation so close to nature that the differences seem to vanish. Issue #4 pursues the highly personal relationship between architects and their plants in Jean-Philippe Vassal's orchid house in Paris. In addition, 91 pays a visit to Benedetta Tagliabue and her opulent garden in the courtyard of her townhouse in Barcelona. The landscape architect Martha Schwartz tells 91 about her highly personal dream project: a landscaped park in Nevada that would revitalize abandoned gold mines.
