Artists of Nigeria

Artists of Nigeria (Hardback)

Unavailable. No reason given.

Artists of Nigeria analyzes the influence of different art systems (museums, cultural institutions, art fairs, galleries, internet) and cultures on the development of modern and contemporary Nigerian art in the past one hundred years. Using a combination of a chronological framework, biographical notes and lavish color illustrations, the book charts the development of modern Nigerian art, and analyzes the works of significant Nigerian artists and art movements within the country and beyond. This comprehensive overview demonstrates the variety and vitality of Nigerian artists and confers on them a visibility they are often denied in global publications. These artists work a great deal in their own country and a lot of work is kept in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Lagos. Most of them studied in Europe or America, like Benedict Enwonwu, who graduated at Ashmolean College and the Slade School of Fine Arts in Oxford, and Chike Aniakor, who received a doctorate in Art History from Indiana University.

Others exhibit their work in art galleries and museums, like Uche Okeke at the Sherman Gallery of Boston University, and Sunday Jack Akpan at the Contemporary Art Museum in Lyon, France. The most important is Olowere: his exotic works are kept at the British Museum in London, at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and at the Smithsonian Institution.
