Customer Reviews

Paula McCartney's Bird Watching takes its design and concept from the artists original hand made book of the same name. At first glance this is a beautifully shot bird watchers journal- complete with field notes. It is almost with disappointment to find that these birds are not real. McCartney has placed models from craft stores into the landscapes that she photographs. They are perfected scenes of nature, completely unachievable in the real world. My initial disappointment faded as I was able to take in the beauty of what is presented. The birds and their surroundings are imagined scenarios yet presented with enough authenticity to stop it from becoming a joke. The books design is as strong as the photographs themselves. The labels beside each of the images display descriptions of each bird and the pages of handwriting on textured paper add a personal attachment to the project. The pictures fill entire pages, making the most of the books A4 size. The inclusion of hand drawn diagrams and collected fauna add the final touches to the feel of the journal. This is a perfect example of how a mass produced book can retain the look and to some extent the feel of a hand made one.
