Synopsis

The first facsimile of a book described as 'a landmark in the history of book illustration'. Thomas Gray's greatest poems, including the Elegy in a Country Churchyard and the Ode on the death of a favourite Cat, brought to life with an eclectic rococo style mingling chinoiserie with gothick elements, inspired by Horace Walpole.

Thomas Gray (1716-1771) wrote what is arguably the most famous poem in English, the Elegy in a Country Churchyard. A famous classicist and scholar, his poetical output was slim but deeply considered. Richard Bentle (1708-82), son of another Cambridge classicist, and a member of Horace Walpole's Committee of Taste, was arguably the finest illustrator of his generation.
