Synopsis

L'Ecriture hospitaliere porte sur la pratique intertextuelle des Trois Contes de Flaubert. C'est en particulier La Legende de saint Julien l'Hospitalier qui autorise cette investigation : plus qu'aucune autre ÷uvre de Flaubert en effet, ce conte obeit a une logique citationnelle. Le conte sacrifie l'originalite diegetique au profit de la transmission d'un recit traditionnel, imitant ainsi la posture du croyant vis-a-vis du message hagiographique qu'il contribue a mettre en circulation. Incorporer le texte referentiel (ou une parole sacree), c'est s'abandonner a l'envahissement d'une puissance devastatrice qui modifie profondement les contours de l'espace hospitalier. Le travail intertextuel s'inspire ici largement de l'accueil que reserve Julien au Christ a la fin du conte : l'invite est percu comme un hote monstrueux, etranger et terrifiant, qui force l'hospitalite plus qu'il ne la sollicite. Les Trois Contes sont donc porteurs de ce dieu mais accusent par la-meme l'impuissance divine a se deployer sui generis. Les trois clausules des contes rappellent a leur maniere la legende de saint Christophe qui, chez Flaubert, devient hote, dans le sens le plus ambigu du terme : en acceptant la charge de l'enfant, Christophe fait naitre un dieu qui lui reserve a son tour un espace celeste.
