Synopsis

Erwin Panofsky war der erste Ordinarius fur Kunstgeschichte der Hamburgischen Universitat und gehorte mit Aby Warburg, Gertrud Bing, Fritz Saxl und Ernst Cassirer zu dem einzigartigen Gelehrtenkreis um die Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburgs. Wie die Warburg-Bibliothek wurde auch Panofsky und mit ihm zahlreiche seiner Schuler im Jahr 1933 in die Emigration getrieben. Dies bedeutete die Zerschlagung einer modernen, aufgeklarten Kunstgeschichte in Deutschland, die dann aber international Karriere machte, als Panofsky die Vorgaben und Anregungen der Hamburger Zeit in Amerika zur wohl bedeutendsten bildanalytischen Methode dieses Jahrhunderts verdichtete. Mit den gesammelten deutschsprachigen Aufsatzen wird das wissenschaftliche Fruhwerk Panofskys, seine Formung durch das intellektuelle Klima des Warburg-Kreises und die akademische Kultur der zwanziger Jahre in Hamburg zum ersten Mal in seiner ganze Dichte erkennbar. Die Herausgeber haben in knapp gehaltenen Anmerkungen jedem Aufsatz einen Kurzkommentar aus heutiger Sicht zugefugt."
