Born in Oneida County, New York, in 1848, Henry Rinaldo Porter was one of the young men who was lured west by the challenge of the new frontier. Beginning with his family roots and education in the eastern United States, this volume details the life and times of Dr. Henry Porter, following him through his work as an Army contract surgeon and early medical practitioner in the western territories of Arizona, Dakota and Montana. It looks at his activities as an entrepreneur and active participant in the early economic development of Bismarck where he became one of the town's prominent and most influential citizens. Most importantly, the work discusses Porter's role in and first hand observations of the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn where he was one of the few survivors.
