James Watt transformed steam engine technology by inventing the condensing engine. He collaborated with Matthew Boulton to form a engineering firm in 1773, which went on to monopolise production of steam engines in England. Samuel Smiles (1812-1904) studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh before becoming a campaigner for Parliamentary reform and a journalist. He was secretary of the Leeds Parliamentary Reform Association and editor of the Leeds Times before becoming secretary of Leeds & Thirsk Railway and, later, of the South Eastern Railway. He wrote biographies about a number of engineers, including George Stephenson and Thomas Telford.
