George Cettl's memoir of life in the Australian outback opal mining frontier town of Coober Pedy, circa 1958-1980. George came to Australia from the Czech Republic, a post World War Two refugee of firstly the Nazis and then the Soviets. Travelling through the harsh Australian outback to Coober Pedy, at that time consisting of two sheds in the desert, without electricity or running water, he soon built a home, not far from the center of town and an area the immigrant European community refereed to as 'Bolshevik Gully'. Arriving with nothing, he made his keep by his wits, his determination and his will to never give up. As the town expanded around him, George segued from mining opal to making specialty jewelry for an increasingly international array of interested buyers. Starting up one of the town's first souvenir shops, he settled into family life until leaving for the grind of city life some 22 years after his arrival. But Coober Pedy will forever be his home.
