Synopsis

A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR

DOES `I LOVE YOU' EVEN MEAN THE SAME THING AS `JE T'AIME'?

When Lauren Collins met a Frenchman at a party one night in London, she had no idea that she would one day wake up to find herself married to him, living in Geneva.

Feeling almost voiceless in French-speaking Switzerland, Lauren was no longer able to order a salad, let alone talk to her husband's parents. But a language barrier was no match for love...

A smart, funny and thoughtful look at how language shapes our lives, When in French shows what happens when two languages, and two very different cultures, collide.

Customer Reviews

For once the usually hyperbolic quotes are justified. This is indeed "a brilliant book" for the simple reason that it is so much more than the title suggests. The relationship between the author and her French partner is but the backdrop to a well observed and entertainingly written book about trying to learn and live with and in another language. How it can change your view of your own language and culture and indeed of who you are and what "home" means. If you want to learn about our understanding of language, the bits everyone agrees on and the ones academics are still arguing about, get an insight about the vast variety of linguistic systems that are out there you should read this book. If you like an entertainingly written autobiographical story, you should read this book. So, read this book, you won't be disappointed.
