Dieses Buch ist ein Beitrag zur reinen Theorie des Geldes. Die Verwendung von Zahlungsmitteln wird hier ausschlie�lich durch fehlende doppelte �bereinstimmung der Tauschw�nsche erkl�rt, ohne R�ckgriff auf Transaktionskosten. Im Hauptteil wird ein Modell pr�sentiert, das die Nachfragestruktur von Samuelsons Modell �berlappender Generationen mit einem nichtkooperativen Ansatz bilateraler Verhandlungen und zuf�lliger Partnerzuordnung verbindet. Es wird ein Gleichgewicht konstruiert, in dem die Individuen von sich aus Zahlungsmittel in Umlauf bringen und f�r alle Transaktionen verwenden. In zwei weiteren, interpretierenden Kapiteln wird die Bedeutung von Geld in Walras-Gleichgewichten untersucht. Zum einen werden station�re Gleichgewichte in �konomien �berlappender Generationen danach klassifiziert, ob der in ihnen abgebildete Tausch die Verwendung eines Zahlungsmittels verlangt. Zum anderen wird begr�ndet, warum auch in endlichen Tausch�konomien ein Zahlungsmittel mitgedacht werden mu�, obwohl es nicht explizit modelliert ist.
