Writing has always been Melvin's ambition in life, and, as well as children's and teen fiction, he has also written short stories and radio dramas. His first book The Cry of the Wolf was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal and he has since gone on to write many other books to great acclaim. He was also chosen to write the novelisation of Billy Elliot. He lives in Manchester with his wife and sons.
