Mark Lemon is a dad of two mixed race kids: Otis and Thea. While Otis and Thea loved all the classics, Mark couldn't help but wonder if there were any books out there with characters that looked like his children. Disillusioned by the woeful lack of diverse characters in children's books, he took matters into his own hands and started penning his books during his daily commute."Diversity in kids' literature didn't even cross my mind until I had my own children," explains Mark. "I wanted to inspire them and tell them amazing tales with characters that looked like them, characters that they could relate to. In the end, I decided that I would have to write them myself."Fast-forward a few months and Mark has committed to writing full time. He has launched his own publishing company, Lemon Drop Books and now, a year on he's just published his third book: Otis Lemon & The Magic Scooter. The books spin tales of wonder and magic as their mixed-race protagonists explore worlds of imagination and exciting adventure. Otis and Thea take children on bedtime adventures with their sidekicks - the slightly bonkers but brilliant Professor Poopy and the Super Sweet Fairy Godmother.Mark has currently sold over 500 books through his own website and his books are now available in Waterstones, Foyles and Amazon and independent bookstores throughout his home town of Bristol. He provides books to local children's hospital libraries and has worked closely with a number of primary schools having created schemes of work to go with every book.
