The Care Standards Act (2002) requires that all newly appointed care workers in nursing and residential care homes undergo a period of induction. Caring for the older person is an induction pack for the newly appointed care workers and their manager/employer to guide them through this process. This easy-to-use manual enables them and their manager/employer to ensure their induction training meets the Skills for Care standards for newly appointed care workers, and that they have received the necessary training to enable them to work safely and appropriately. The manual is divided into five chapters based on the Skills for Care common induction standards (2005) and comprises a series of simple learning activities. The chapters are cross-referenced to the revised Level 2 N/SVQ in Health and Social Care: the prinicipals of caring; the role of the care worker; maintaining health and safety at work; communicating effectively; and recognise and respond to abuse and neglect. The pack is designed so that the care worker can keep a record of the completed activities in their professional portfolio, and use them as evidence towards and NVQ.

The pack also includes guidelines for managers outlining how they can best support the induction process. This is of particular interest to: home care workers and newly appointed care workers and their managers/employers in nursing and residential care homes as well as local authority social services and housing departments.
