Synopsis

A practical programme for those who work with people who have learning difficulties, this should provide the means with which to aid students to make choices and decisions about their learning. It is a combined tutor and student programme which offers both the means by which tutors can enable people with learning difficulties to help themselves and a curriculum/learning framework for assessing student competencies. There are three sections: a staff section, a "Keys to Independence Framework" section, and a student self-assessment. The five learning areas are: communication; numeracy; self-sufficiency; social proficiency and technology. Its pictorial format should allow students without reading, or with limited reading, to participate. They should be able to monitor their own progress, be able to make choices and practise their new skills. The material can be photocopied for use by students.
