This book could be made more usable. It uses small colour coded dots to indicate gender of new vocab. I didn't spot these for the first 3 weeks use of the book and was wondering why der, die, das wasn't included as part of the vocab. The dots are blue, green and red and tiny. I wonder if they are distinguishable by people with colour blindness. I have normal colour vision and struggle to distinguish the dots indoor lighting. I did not find a key explaining their use. There are other colour codes next to sections of speech. I think they're supposed to distinguish one speaker from another but I'm not sure and I don't find them helpful so would prefer something more obvious. I like the use of illustrations to illustrate vocab and grammar. A good example is the use of illustration to show when to use dative and when not. Most of these illustrations are about as small as they could be without using a magnifying glass and some can be hard to see or interpret. I use the book to write down translations and highlight new language within the sections but the book doesn't allow me any space to make notes. Texts with new vocab could be double spaced to make this better, for example,and wider margins provided throughtout. The content is fine. Texts are suitably challenging ie stretching but not impenetrable. Apparently there are different versions of the book and students in my class have bought two versions with different page numbers. They look the same from the front cover so the versions need to be more visibly discernible by looking at the front cover and perhaps in the product description to avoid this confusion.
