Synopsis

Having worked for over 60 colleges and universities and visited hundreds more in careers as institutional planners and designers, the authors have found that in most cases, the physical campus mirrors the issues an institution faces. Mission and Place shows how institutions of higher education can provide leadership in addressing important strategic issues through campus design and planning and how at the same time they can create an enduring legacy. It presents a visionary mission-based framework that the trustees, presidents, and senior administrators of today's colleges and universities, and their design and planning consultants, can use in overall campus planning and design decisions; and it focuses this vision with specific actions that can be undertaken at all levels of institutional governance and administration.

DANIEL R. KENNEY, AIA, AICP, is a partner at Sasaki Associates, a world leader in planning and design, and director of its Institutional Planning group. He has led planning and design projects for more than 60 institutions across the United States and internationally. In addition to campus planning work, he has completed master plans for a number of cities and districts, as well as projects in waterfront planning and design and large-scale and mixed-use planning and design. His projects have won awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Planning Association. Kenney has taught campus planning at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design Professional Development Course. RICARDO DUMONT is a lead design partner at Sasaki Associates and serves on its Board of Directors. He has lead master planning and urban design projects for over 35 universities and institutions. He has also led residential district plans, neighborhood master plans, and urban district plans for a number of colleges and universities and their surrounding municipalities. His urban development and regeneration work for public and private concerns includes planning, community process, zoning analysis, and urban design through construction for mixed use, research, residential projects. The American Insitute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the Society for College and University Planners have awarded projects led by Mr. Dumont. GINGER S. KENNEY has served on the Board of Visitors and Governors of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is the president of the Boston chapter of the College's Alumni Association and a member of the Alumni Association's Board of Directors. With over 20 years' experience in systems and organizational consulting, Kenney expanded on her professional interests with a post-doctoral research fellowship in psychology from the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina.
