Synopsis

"Analyzing Cultures" is intended to be a comprehensive introduction to the field of cultural semiotics. It is designed for classroom use for courses in a number of disciplines, including: introductory courses in semiotics; courses in cultural studies; anthropology courses on culture; and, social science courses on human nature. Each of the twelve chapters is a self-contained, clearly written unit. Many practical examples of how semiotics can be used are given. There are activities and questions for seminar discussions included with each chapter. There is no other text remotely like this that provides a practical framework for studying semiotics in the classroom environment. "Analyzing Cultures" is also an easy-to-use introduction and reference for people who want to understand the whys and wherefores of semiotics. "Advances in Semiotics" edited by Thomas A. Sebeok.

Marcel Danesi is Professor and Director of the Program in Semiotics, University of Toronto. Among his publications are: Vico, Metaphor, and the Origin of Language (Indiana University Press, 1993) and Cool: The Signs and Meanings of Adolescence (University of Toronto Press, 1994).Paul Perron is Professor and Principal of University College, University of Toronto. He is author of numerous works on narratology.
