With regard to his writing those years in exile became the most productive ones for Berthold Viertel, a Viennese Jew, born 1885. This study supplies material that takes into account the biographical and aesthetic context of Viertel's exile work. An analysis of poems as well as of some of Viertel's correspondence, selected from his extensive literary heritage, allows for an interesting new approach to questions of periodisation.
