Unter Bezugnahme auf Mikhail Bakhtins Chronotopos-Theorie werden moderne Amerika-Repraesentationen in den Texten von vier einflussreichen, zeitgenoessischen Schriftstellern untersucht: Max Frischs Montauk, Peter Handkes Der kurze Brief zum langen Abschied, Guenter Kunerts Der andere Planet und Martin Walsers Brandung. Die amerikanische Landschaft liefert den Grundstoff und den referentiellen Code fuer ein Einfrieren der zeitlichen Dimension. Die Schilderung eines narrativen Amerika wird in der Problematik des schriftlichen Fixierens reflektiert: Alle Autoren sind sich der Gefahr einer moeglichen Reduktion des Beschriebenen bewusst und verlegen aus diesem Grund die offensichtlichere Betonung ihrer Texte auf das Innenleben der Protagonisten oder auf aeussere Gegenstaende. Dadurch erreichen die vier Texte eine Annaeherung an das, was man den amerikanischen Traum nannte.

Die Autorin: Aminia M. Brueggemann lehrt seit 1993 als Gastprofessorin an der Brown Universitaet in Rhode Island. Nach einem Studium der Germanistik und Geschichte an der Albert-Ludwigs- und der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet in Deutschland, beendete sie ihre Studien mit einer Dissertation in deutscher Literatur an der Universitaet von Michigan. Ihre Veroeffentlichungen und Vortraege umspannen kritische Analysen zeitgenoessischer Schriftsteller und Schriftstellerinnen wie Anne Duden, Max Frisch, Wolfgang Hilbig, Guenter Kunert, Hans Schaedlich und Christa Wolf.
