Cet ouvrage explore la relation entre reve et connaissance au cours du 18e siecle et a l'approche du mouvement romantique. Il decrit comment le reve, comme phenomene litteraire et culturel, etait represente dans les discours dominants de la seconde moitie du 18e siecle, et comment l'evolution de ces discours reflete le changement d'episteme qui, d'apres Michel Foucault, se serait produit au passage du 18e au 19e siecle. Vesna Petrovich offre une nouvelle lecture d'ouvrages de Diderot et de Rousseau, ainsi qu'une presentation de textes moins connus de theologiens et de philosophes tels que Condillac, Formey, La Mettrie et Cabanis. Cette recherche indique les points d'emergence de nouvelles epistemologies et aboutit a une meilleure comprehension du 18e siecle et de la relation entre litterature et connaissance, a la lumiere des textes critiques contemporains.

L'auteur: Vesna C. Petrovich est maitre de conferences a Grinnell College, aux Etats-Unis. Elle est titulaire d'un doctorat en Litterature Francaise de l'Universite du Michigan et d'une maitrise de Lettres Modernes preparee a Paris III.
