Brechts episches Theater war von Anfang an als ein musikalisches Theater konzipiert; und als solches hatte es musikalische Vorlaeufer. Besonders Strawinsky bereitete mit Histoire du soldat und Oedipus Rex Neuerungen vor, die Brecht spaeter in seiner Theatertheorie als episch festhielt und definierte. Diese historisch-analytische Studie verfolgt das epische Musiktheater Strawinskys und Brechts aus seiner geschichtlichen Tradition heraus und untersucht sein kunsttheoretisches Selbstverstaendnis. Ein historischer Abriss des europaeischen Antiwagnerianismus bildet die Grundlage fuer ein Verstaendnis der Strukturprinzipien, die das epische Musiktheater konstituieren. Eine vergleichende detaillierte Analyse von Histoire du soldat und Die Dreigroschenoper, die auch die kuenstlerischen Beitraege von Ramuz und Weill in Betracht zieht, veranschaulicht die innere Verwandtschaft zwischen Strawinsky und Brecht.

Die Autorin: Vera Stegmann ist Assistant Professor an der Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. 1989 promovierte sie in Germanistik an der Indiana University in Bloomington, wo sie als Nebenfach Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft studierte und sich auf Literature and the Other Arts spezialisierte. An der University of Missouri in Columbia schloss sie 1981 ihren Magister in Hispanistik ab. Waehrend ihres Studiums hat sie ausserdem eine langjaehrige musikalische Ausbildung absolviert.
