Dieses Buch befasst sich mit der Entwicklung des oesterreichischen Dichters Hugo von Hofmannsthal als Theaterdichter, der der Rolle der Buehne in seinem Werk eine immer groessere Bedeutung zuschrieb. Durch eine Untersuchung ausgewaehlter Dramen aus den von Hofmannsthal selber definierten drei Epochen seines dramatischen Schaffens wird gezeigt, wie der Dichter sich immer mehr um die Buehnenwirksamkeit seiner Werke bemuehte. Neben den lyrischen Dramen und Alkestis werden einige spaetere Werke des Dichters behandelt: der Publikumserfolg Jedermann sowie die verschiedenen Fassungen der missglueckten Komoedie Cristinas Heimreise und des mehrmals revidierten Librettos Ariadne auf Naxos. Mit den Revisionen und Umarbeitungen der Texte wollte Hofmannsthal Stuecke schaffen, die dem Zuschauer seine Ideen am wirkungsvollsten offenbaren, waehrend sie ihn zugleich unterhalten.
