Das literarische Werk der oesterreichischen Exilautorin Hilde Spiel (1911-1990) vermittelt dem Leser ein kritisches Bild unseres Jahrhunderts aus der Sicht einer politisch unabhaengigen Frau. Die vorliegende Studie konzentriert sich auf ihre erzaehlende Prosa und untersucht sie in ihrem zeitgeschichtlichen und biographischen Kontext. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses steht Hilde Spiels Auseinandersetzung mit verschiedenen, widerspruechlichen Identitaetsmustern und politischen Weltbildern: Europaeertum versus nationale Identitaeten, Bewahrung juedischer Traditionen oder Assimilation, Sozialismus versus Kapitalismus. Im Spannungsfeld solcher Antagonismen zeigen ihre Werke eigenstaendige Positionen auf, die ueber den begrenzten Horizont der Zeit hinausweisen. Humanitaet und Toleranz als Wertmassstaebe des Handelns im politischen wie im privaten Leben - diese literarische Botschaft Hilde Spiels ist heute aktueller denn je.

Die Autorin: Waldtraud Strickhausen, geb. 1961, studierte Germanistik und Anglistik in Marburg und Sheffield. Nach zweijaehriger Lehrtaetigkeit in Grossbritannien promovierte sie 1993 mit der vorliegenden Arbeit an der Phillips-Universitaet Marburg. Ihre Veroeffentlichungen in Zeitschriften und Sammelbaenden behandeln die Rezeption der Exilliteratur in Grossbritannien wie auch einzelne Exilautoren und deren Werke.
