Synopsis

The first major work providing translations and analysis of Christopher Marlowe's most important writings in Spanish. It not only looks at stylistic issues, like common vocabulary, it also deals with the cultural elements that underlie the plays. The main aim of this work is to carry out a contrastive analysis of three tragedies by Christopher Marlowe: "Edward II, The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus, The Jew of Malta" and their translations into Spanish. It is divided into two chapters, an epilogue and two appendices. In chapter one, some grammatical and syntactic constructions are analysed by comparing the original play and its translations. In chapter two, by using the contrastive approach, a study is carried out on some cultural aspects which can be found both in the original texts and in their translations. The epilogue collects the main conclusions reached in both previous chapters. In appendix one, a brief biography on Marlowe is included. Finally, in appendis two, a typology of the plays chosen is offered, both of the English editions and their translations into Spanish.

An analysis of the original plays is also included, regarding the number of acts, scenes, and what happens in each of them, being all these characteristics compared with their translations.
