Les mythologues nous apprennent qu'il y a quelques milliers d'annees, avant l'epoque des religions judeo-chretiennes et celle des dieux de l'Olympe, une divinite feminine etait celebree sous des noms multiples, de l'Espagne a l'Inde. Ils affirment que cette divinite, que l'on croit detronee par les dieux patriarcaux, est encore vivante et constitue une menace contre certains aspects de la culture occidentale. Si le theatre, comme on l'a dit, puise une grande part des materiaux qui le constituent dans les fantasmes de la collectivite, est-il possible de trouver des traces de la Mere primordiale dans le theatre francais du XXeme siecle? La mythologie matriarcale chez Claudel, Montherlant, Crommelynck, Ionesco et Genet apporte une reponse affirmative a cette question. L'objet de cet ouvrage est de retrouver la Mere detronee dans les oeuvres des cinq dramaturges. L'analyse presentee combine deux methodes: l'interpretation psychanalytique et le parallele avec la mythologie. La premiere methode eclaire les oeuvres individuelles - les reves du dramaturge -, la seconde les place dans le contexte collectif decrit plus haut - les reves de la culture occidentale.
