Les essais qui composent ce livre, ecrits entre 1989 et 1992, portent sur la vision sociale et politique de La Bruyere (1645-1696). Celui-ci est presente comme un auteur satirique et ironique qui demythifie, dans un esprit humaniste, a la fois les valeurs morales traditionnelles de la noblesse et celles de la bourgeoisie. Il est aussi considere comme un auteur ambigu, chez qui l'on trouve aussi bien du pessimisme que de l'optimisme. C'est pourtant sur ce dernier aspect - la part de l'espoir, plus rarement percue par la critique actuelle - que l'auteur de ces essais a tente de mettre l'accent.

L'auteur: Homayoun Mazaheri est associate professor a Auburn University, en Alabama. Diplome de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, et docteur en litterature francaise de Brown University (Rhode Island), il a publie de nombreux articles sur la litterature francaise du XVIIe siecle dans des revues specialisees en Europe et aux Etats-Unis.
