Cet essai retrace l'histoire de la fable en vers au XVIIIe siecle, de Houdar de La Motte a Ginguene. Apres avoir presente la poetique du genre et tente de mesurer l'influence de La Fontaine, il analyse les oeuvres des auteurs les plus representatifs, novateurs ou traditionalistes avant 1760, pedagogues, conteurs, philosophes ou polemistes apres cette date, sans negliger d'examiner le legs du fabuliste majeur que fut Florian (1775-1794) ni celui de ses principaux rivaux, Le Bailly et le duc de Nivernais.

Jean-Noel Pascal, ancien eleve de l'Ecole normale superieure, agrege de l'Universite, docteur habilite es-lettres, enseigne la litterature francaise du XVIIIe siecle a l'Universite Paul Valery de Montpellier. Ses travaux concernent principalement Mlle de Lespinasse, dont il a publie les Lettres a Condorcet, et les fabulistes du XVIIIe siecle, auxquels il a consacre deux anthologies (La Fable au Siecle des Lumieres, en 1991, et Les Fabulistes de La Fontaine au Romantisme, en 1993).
