Synopsis

De tous les espaces de la demeure que la fiction dite realiste represente, l'escalier est sans doute le moins investi par l'ecriture : sa presence dans le texte, qui donne parfois lieu a une description elaboree, se limite le plus souvent a une mention tres discrete. Or, il se trouve que les degres, conduisant d'un etage a un autre, peuvent mener conjointement d'un etat a un autre, et, davantage, a la perception d'une mutation. Encouragee en cela par la solitude qui regne frequemment dans ce lieu, ou, differemment, par les particularites, physiques ou psychologiques, des rencontres qui a l'occasion s'y produisent, la conscience est susceptible d'acceder ici a un mode original de cognition, qu'elle n'aurait pu elaborer ailleurs : acquisition peut-etre imprevue d'un savoir nouveau, dans laquelle l'orientation du mouvement - vers le haut, vers le bas - intervient de facon preponderante.

Relu dans cette perspective, le roman francais du XIXe siecle, dont un important echantillonnage constitue le corpus de cet essai, en acquiert comme un surcroit d'intelligibilite. Les aventures de l'esprit dans l'escalier ne bouleversent pas notre apprehension de cette litterature du sujet triomphant, mais elles l'affinent sans doute. Elles permettent, aussi, de retrouver, dans les evolutions de cette thematique, le mouvement d'une histoire de la fiction romanesque, voire de l'Histoire elle-meme.
