Die vorliegende Arbeit entwickelt eine kultur- und psychohistorische Deutung literarischer Komik und ihres geschichtlichen Wandels vom 16. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert, die in theoretischer Hinsicht vor allem Norbert Elias' Konzept des Zivilisationsprozesses verpflichtet ist, aber auch Arbeiten Freuds, Bachtins und Erich Auerbachs entscheidende Anregungen verdankt. Anhand der kontrastiven Interpretation von Fischarts Geschichtklitterung (1590) und Lessings Nathan der Weise (1779), der als ein Abkoemmling der Komoedientradition zu deuten ist, wird das Spektrum literarischer Komik sowohl in historischer als auch systematischer Hinsicht entfaltet.
