Melancholy, lovesickness, boredom, madness and sorrow are powerful themes in artistic and literary works of all periods. In this study Peter Toohey explores these emotions of the self as described and discussed in classical, Hellenistic and Roman literature, arguing that a discernible shift can be detected in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Whether the tendency towards greater enquiry into the self, becoming more inward-looking, reflects an increase in depression and melancholy for example, or a greater interest in defining and studying it, remains inconclusive. However, Peter Toohey traces new and deeper ways of registering and reflecting on emotions in ancient literature, drawing parallels between this and the modern world.
