Synopsis

Parallel zu Goethes literarischen Leistungen laesst sich sein deutlich ausgepraegtes Interesse an den bildenden Kuensten erkennen. Die fortschrittlichen Bildformen seiner Zeit entstanden vorwiegend auf den Gebieten der Graphik und der Zeichnung, welche wiederum eng mit der Literatur des Tages in Verbindung standen. Goethe erlebte die verschiedenen kuenstlerischen und soziologisch damit verknuepften Entwicklungen und nahm selbst an Kunstproduktion und -handel, sowie an der Kunstschriftstellerei teil. Dies zeigt sich schon in seinen Frankfurter Jugendjahren und laesst sich durch die folgende Zeit des ersten Weimarer Jahrzehnts, der italienischen Reise, der nachitalienischen Jahre bis zum Erscheinen seines ausgepraegten Klassizismus hin verfolgen. Die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Bild und Text, wie Goethe sie in dieser Zeit zu verstehen lernte, spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in seinem Werdegang zum Klassizismus.
