Synopsis

The story of social awareness, poverty, chance, intrigue and romance, played out during the closing years of the 18th century. Initially on the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, then later in the British Navy aboard a frigate during the earlier years of the Napoleonic War. It involving a peasant lad, Neil McDonald, born and raised in Brodick, who when unable to find work locally is left to live on his wits when initially attempting to make his way in the world. Finding himself pressganged into the navy by Excisemen as a result of his suspected smuggling activities on the Island before flourishing there, principally on account of his earlier having educated himself, against the odds, and particularly in the fields of mathematics and navigation. Times of success and failure while at sea, together with the intrigue and romance that ensues, both there and back at home on Arran. The latter leading to a smouldering enmity on the part of his by then supposed mentor, the Duke who owns Arran at the time. The result of his earlier indescretions there, with success in the end coming more from chance than any further effort on his part.
