In 1942, Charlotte Gray, an ordinary young Scottish woman, is dropped into Occupied France on a vital mission: officially, to run a simple errand for a British special operations group, and unofficially to search for her lover, Peter, an English RAF pilot missing in action.

The France she remembers from her youth is unrecognisable. Some greet the occupying Nazis with joy – others with utter terror. Charlotte forms a close bonds with Resistance member Julien and his artist father Levade. Unable to find Peter, Charlotte decides to stay on in France. She is drawn into helping Julien hide two small Jewish boys, Andre and Jacob, who's parents have been murdered in the death camps of Nazi Europe. If they are caught, the boys will surely be 'deported to the East'....

This is a beautiful book. The detail is outstanding: occupied France leaps right off the page. If you enjoyed Birdsong, this is a must-read.
